The recent grants for health courses explained
11th February 2020
In December 2019 the government announced it would be making additional funds available to support people training for some health professions. In January 2020 it was announced several of the Allied Health Professions are included.
What does this mean for you?
The following explains which AHP students are eligible for additional maintenance grants, and how much they are entitled to.
£5000 additional, non-repayable, maintenance grant
The basic additional maintenance grant is £5000 per year, which does not have to be paid back. This comes on top of whatever other arrangements you might have in place, such as a student loan (which you will still have to pay back). The extra funding is available to you if you are studying the following AHP courses:
- Diagnostic radiography
- Dietetics
- Occupational therapy
- Operating department practitioner
- Orthoptics
- Paramedicine
- Physiotherapy
- Podiatry
- Prosthetics and Orthotics
- Therapeutic radiography
- Speech and language therapy
For some students and some subjects, further funding is available:
£1000 towards childcare costs
£1000 if you are studying in a region that is struggling to recruit
£1000 if you are starting a course in the following professions:
- Diagnostic Radiography
- Therapeutic Radiography
- Prosthetics and Orthotics
- Podiatry
- Orthoptics
This means that for
students starting these courses there is £6000 per year available in
maintenance support – plus more if you have childcare costs or live in an area
that is struggling to recruit. We don’t yet know details about which regions
are eligible for this additional funding.
